Battery Boost in Calgary

A dead or weak battery is one of the most common roadside calls. Here's what to expect when you call RST.

When You Need a Battery Boost

A dead or weak battery is one of the most common roadside calls we get. It usually shows up as slow cranking, clicking when you turn the key, dashboard lights that dim or flicker, or a vehicle that simply doesn't respond at all. Cold weather makes this worse — a cold snap in Calgary can turn a marginal battery into a dead one overnight.

Common Causes

  • An older battery reaching the end of its useful life
  • Interior lights, headlights, or accessories left on
  • Extreme cold reducing battery capacity
  • A parasitic electrical drain from a component that won't shut off
  • A charging system (alternator) issue rather than the battery itself

While You Wait

Turn off the radio, lights, and any accessories to avoid further draining the battery. If it's safe, pop the hood so our driver can get started right away.

How RST Can Help

We can boost most vehicles with a weak or dead battery on the spot, which is often enough to get you back on the road. If the battery won't hold a charge, we can also arrange a tow to a shop for testing or replacement.

When It Might Not Be the Battery

If the vehicle boosts but dies again shortly after, or the lights and electronics behave oddly even with the engine running, the charging system may be the underlying issue — worth mentioning to a mechanic once you're mobile again.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs I need a battery boost?

Slow cranking, clicking sounds when turning the key, dim interior lights, or a vehicle that doesn't respond at all when you try to start it.

Can extreme cold really kill a battery overnight?

Yes, cold weather reduces a battery's effective capacity, which is why battery calls increase noticeably during Calgary cold snaps.

What if my vehicle won't hold a charge after boosting?

That can indicate the battery needs replacing or there's a charging system issue. We can tow your vehicle to a shop for diagnosis.

Is boosting safe for all vehicle types?

Most standard vehicles can be safely boosted. If you have a specialty or hybrid vehicle, mention that when you call.
